Move Against Cancer Africa (MACA) Participates in IRCE/IHVN 2nd Annual Scientific Symposium

In July 2024, the International Research Centre of Excellence/Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IRCE/IHVN) hosted its 2nd Annual Scientific Symposium under the theme:
“Expanding Partnerships to Sickle Cell Disease and Cancer Research.”
The symposium brought together stakeholders from various disciplines across the health sciences to foster knowledge exchange, stimulate new research collaborations, and spotlight advancements in two of Africa’s critical health challenges: sickle cell disease and cancer.
As part of its commitment to advancing cancer research and advocating for patient-centred care, Move Against Cancer Africa (MACA) partnered with the National Hospital Abuja (NHA) to co-develop and submit an abstract for consideration. We are pleased to announce that the abstract was accepted for poster presentation.
The poster, titled: “Cancer Patient and Caregiver Perspectives on Laboratory Services at the Oncology Clinic: Satisfaction and Challenges,” highlighted findings from our ongoing work exploring patient and caregiver experiences within the oncology department of the National Hospital Abuja. It focused on service satisfaction levels and systemic challenges related to laboratory support in cancer care.
The two-day symposium featured a dynamic lineup of presentations, panel discussions, and networking sessions. Day one was dedicated to sickle cell disease, while day two focused on cancer research.
Pharm. Oluwakemi Oluwagbohun (MACA) and Mrs. Catherine Akporhuarho (National Hospital Abuja Laboratory Services) represented the presenting team at the poster session. Both were on ground during the afternoon sessions of both days to engage with visitors, respond to questions, and share insights on the significance of improving laboratory experiences for cancer patients and their caregivers.
MACA’s participation in the symposium reflects our ongoing commitment to evidence-based advocacy and collaboration. Through initiatives like this, we continue to amplify the voices of patients, bridge gaps in cancer care delivery, and work with partners to ensure that health systems respond to the real needs of those they serve.
