In January 2024, representatives from Move Against Cancer Africa (MACA) visited the NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre in Lagos, Nigeria. The NSIA-LUTH is a state-of-the-art facility believed to be the largest and most advanced cancer treatment centre in Africa.
The MACA team, represented by Executive Director Mr. Caleb Egwuenu and Research Associate Blessing Erinwusi was received by Dr. Lilian Ekpo, Director of NSIA-LUTH, along with Dr. Joseph, Consultant Clinical Radiation Oncologist. The visit aimed to strengthen collaboration, explore research opportunities, and gain more knowledge about the facility’s approach to patient care and innovation in cancer treatment.
Key Discussions
- Patient Experience: NSIA-LUTH uses a patient-centered model, including feedback mechanisms and periodic reviews to improve care quality.
- Sustainability: The Centre is self-funded through service revenue, ensuring ongoing maintenance and accountability.
- Access and Equity: Dr. Ekpo emphasized that while services are premium, financial support is available for patients who demonstrate need.
Future Plans
MACA and NSIA-LUTH expressed mutual interest in collaborative cancer research and advocacy. Plans were discussed for the 2025 IASLC Lung Cancer Conference in Ghana, aimed at bringing together African cancer experts, advocates, and institutions.
At the close of the visit, the teams captured memorable moments with photos around the facility’s LINAC systems to symbolize a shared commitment to advancing cancer care in Africa.
